Long before GPS, radar, or even reliable road signs, early airmail pilots needed a different kind of navigation—one painted across the American landscape in bold, practical strokes. In the 1920s and ’30s, giant concrete arrows were installed across the country to help guide pilots as they ferried mail coast to coast. These arrows pointed the way between beacon towers and airfields, often cutting across rural prairies and growing cities alike.

Tulsa’s own arrow, planted high atop Reservoir Hill, once pointed westward along the route to Waynoka, Oklahoma, part of a critical cross-country link. Nearby, the old Tulsa Municipal Airport (now Tulsa International) served as a major hub in this historic route. The arrow—120 feet long and weathered by time—is a quiet monument to an age when flying was still new, raw, and daring.
